CT Scan Preparation Guide
Everything you need to know before your Computed Tomography (CT) scan appointment. Please read and follow these instructions carefully.
Preparation Checklist
Follow these instructions on the day of your CT scan appointment.
Fast for 4 Hours
Do not eat any food for 4 hours before your appointment. You may continue to drink water during this period.
Drink 1 Litre of Water
Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before your appointment. You may use the bathroom as needed.
Continue Medications
Take your regular medications as prescribed unless your doctor has specifically advised otherwise.
Bring Reading Glasses
You may need to complete paperwork on arrival. Please bring reading glasses if required.
Please Bring With You
- Doctor referral letter
- Medicare card
- Concession / Pension card
- DVA card (if applicable)
- Previous scans or reports
Medical Information
Important health information you need to be aware of before your CT scan.
Blood Test Requirement
All patients will be asked whether they have any of the following conditions. If yes, please bring recent blood test results from within the last 3 months.
Contrast Injection
Many CT scans require an iodinated contrast injection to clearly show blood vessels and organs. A radiologist or radiographer will explain the procedure fully before your scan begins.
If you have special dietary requirements such as diabetes, please check with your doctor or contact our clinic in advance.

Tests That Require No Preparation
The following CT scans do not require fasting or special preparation beforehand.
- Brain
- Sinus or facial bones
- Temporal bones (inner ear)
- Spine
- Knee
- Wrist
- CT scans of bones (general)
