National Lung Cancer Screening Program Australia: What You Need to Know About Early Detection

Learn how the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) uses low-dose CT scans to help detect lung cancer earlier in eligible Australians.

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) has now launched across Australia. It offers eligible people a free low-dose CT scan every two years to help detect lung cancer earlier, before symptoms appear.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, this may be an important opportunity to check your lung health through early detection. At CareWell Diagnostix Tarneit, we are proud to support this program by providing trusted imaging services to our local community in Melbourne’s west.

What Is the National Lung Cancer Screening Program?

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is a federally funded initiative that uses low-dose CT (LDCT) scans to check for early signs of lung cancer in people who are considered high-risk but do not currently have symptoms.

The program aims to improve early detection and reduce the number of Australians diagnosed at a late stage, when treatment options may be more limited.

Who Is Eligible for the Program?

You may be eligible for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are aged between 50 and 70 years
  • You do not currently have symptoms of lung cancer (such as coughing up blood, chest pain, or unexplained weight loss)
  • You have a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years
  • You are either:
    • a current smoker, or
    • a former smoker who quit within the past 10 years

A GP can help you calculate your pack-year history and determine your eligibility. If you’re unsure, you can use the government eligibility tool or speak directly with your doctor.

Remember: The program is designed for people at higher risk who do not currently have symptoms. If you have concerning symptoms, you should see your GP as soon as possible.

How to Access a Low-Dose CT Scan Through the Program

To take part in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program:

  • Use the government screening eligibility tool or speak with your GP
  • If you’re eligible, your GP can refer you for a free low-dose CT scan
  • Your scan will be completed at an approved radiology provider

If you are eligible, your GP can refer you for a low-dose CT scan at CareWell Diagnostix Tarneit, where our team provides timely, high-quality care. Results are reviewed by trained specialists, and you will be contacted for follow-up if needed. If your results are normal, you will be invited to screen again every two years.

Why Early Detection of Lung Cancer Matters

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia, often because it is diagnosed at a late stage. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program helps eligible Australians detect lung changes early, before symptoms develop, when treatment options may be more effective.

Screening cannot prevent lung cancer, but it may help find it at a stage where more can be done.

Designed for Safety, Accessibility, and Equity

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program has been co-designed with First Nations communities, clinicians, and public health experts to support safety, fairness, and cultural responsiveness.

All scans are low-dose CT, which means the radiation dose is much lower than a standard CT scan, and the scan itself usually takes only a few minutes.

Important: Not for People With Symptoms

If you are experiencing symptoms such as coughing up blood, persistent chest pain, or unexplained weight loss, the screening program is not the appropriate pathway. You should speak directly with your GP as soon as possible so that your symptoms can be properly assessed.
